All directories contain an INDEX and README file. README explains the purpose of the directory. The INDEX file lists the names and a brief description of the files in that directory.
A selection of CME images from approximately 40 events recorded by the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) Coronagraph are available at this time.
To get the SMM C/P event images type :
ftp> cd /d5/events/smm/cme ftp> lsYou will see the following :
INDEX Directory contents file README Information file gif GIF images jpg JPEG images log CME catalogues ps Postscript images tif Tiff imagesThe CME images are available in either GIF, JPEG or TIFF format. If you wish to access GIF images, type: ftp> cd gif If you wish to access JPEG images, type: ftp> cd jpg If you wish to access TIFF images, type: ftp> cd tif Each of the GIF, JPG and TIF directories contain sub-directories, one for each year during which event observations are available. Choose the desired year by moving into the appropriate sub-directory. For instance, to select the 1980 sub-directory, type:
ftp> cd 1980
Before you transfer images, set the binary option in FTP by typing: ftp> binary
To transfer one image at a time type: ftp> get filename
To transfer all images in the directory type: ftp> mget *
If you wish to obtain mass ejection data that is not yet posted to this directory, please email your request to: mlso_data_requests@ucar.edu)
ftp> cd /d5/events/smm/cme/log
The files containing SMM C/P CME information are:
smmcp_cme_catalog_1980.ps smmcp_cme_catalog_1984.ps smmcp_cme_catalog_1985.ps smmcp_cme_catalog_1986.ps smmcp_cme_catalog_1987.ps smmcp_cme_catalog_1988.ps smmcp_cme_catalog_ 1989.psThese images are in Postscript format.
Before you transfer any files, set the binary option in FTP by typing: ftp> binary
To transfer one image at a time type: ftp> get filename
To transfer all of the catalogue files in the directory, type: ftp> mget *.ps
ftp> cd /d5/events/smm/syn
The GIF files containing SMM C/P MAPS are organized into separate
directories for each year:
1980 1984 1985 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989For instance, to select the 1980 sub-directory, type:
ftp> cd 1980
Before you transfer synoptic map images, set the binary option in FTP by typing: ftp> binary
To transfer one image at a time type: ftp> get filename
To transfer all images in the directory type: ftp> mget *
The synoptic map filenames contain either a single Carrington rotation number, or a starting and ending rotation numbers, follwed by the radius at which the azimuthal scans were performed. For instance, "r20" is used for a map constructed from a scan at 2.0 solar radii. The other two available heights are 2.8 ("r28") and 3.4 ("r34") solar radii.
The files which contain the phrase "cme" show the position and extent of identified coronal mass ejections.
